Bookkeeping built around your business
Since 6 April 2024, the cash basis has become the default method of accounting for most sole traders, making bookkeeping simpler than ever.
We’ll recommend a bookkeeping system that suits the way you work, whether that’s replacing spreadsheets with cloud software or supporting your existing accounting setup.
The result is accurate records throughout the year and far less stress when it comes to completing your tax return.
No more unexpected tax bills
One of the biggest challenges for new sole traders is knowing how much tax they’ll need to pay and when it’s due.
We’ll help you understand your tax position throughout the year, explain payments on account in plain English and give you confidence that you’re putting enough aside, so there are no unwelcome surprises when your tax bill arrives.
Get ready for Making Tax Digital

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to keep every receipt?
Yes. HMRC requires you to keep records that support your tax return, generally for at least five years after the submission deadline. We recommend keeping digital copies as you go, making record keeping much easier and preparing you for Making Tax Digital.
What expenses can I claim as a sole trader?
This depends on your business and circumstances. From tools and equipment to business mileage and a proportion of home working costs, we’ll review your expenses against current HMRC guidance to ensure your return is accurate and you claim everything you’re entitled to.
When is my tax return due?
Online Self Assessment tax returns must normally be submitted by 31 January following the end of the tax year, with any tax owed due by the same date. We’ll aim to complete your return well in advance, giving you plenty of time to prepare.
